The Phi Psi Experience
Submitted by Drew Russell on 11/30/10 03:46:00 PM
I got a great education when I was an undergraduate many years ago, and I think being a member of Phi Kappa Psi Maryland Alpha chapter was a part of that. Its something that's helped form my life. - Michael Bloomberg (successful business man and current Mayor of New York City)
I can remember laughter and a lot of it, and the warmth of friendships and a lot of it, and it never went away.
- Paul Coverdell (United States Senator from Georgia)
Let us be what we say we are:
a fraternity, not a club,
run by men, and not boys,
and based on ideals, not expediency.
- Ralph "Dud" Daniel aka Mr. Phi Psi (Executive Director Emeritus of Phi Kappa Psi)
I certainly didn't have the high school background, in math for example, to be in engineering school. and yet a couple of my fraternity brothers, who were brilliant scholars - electrical engineers, sort of took me under their wing, and without that personal tutoring and help, I wouldn't have gotten out of Valpo.
- Don Fites (Former Chairmen and CEO of Caterpillar Inc.)
...One of the things that the Phi Kappa Psi has to offer a young man is not to feel like you're ever going to be a cookie-cut stamped out sort of figure...To have that wonderful kind of anchor of a fraternal group is a geat help to a undergarduate student trying to find his way in this tough and rather impersonal world today.
- Peter Graves (actor)
I don't think that college would be the same to me if I didn't have the backing and the help of the people in the Fraternity... I was a Phi Psi when I got here, and I left a Phi Psi.

Over the last half decade, a Phi Psi has worn the coveted Homecoming Crown. Our winning tradition has indeed become a dynasty. Next year's Homecoming will be a special one as it marks the first Homecoming in which we will have a Chapter House. Hopefully, it will also mark the 6th year in a row in which we win Homecoming King.

Over the past few months we have been working hard to incorporate the various Celect Systems into the day to day operations of our chapter and our recent accomplishments reflect the effectiveness of the Celect System. Two major accomplishments that directly correlate to the use of our website are the recent signing of our largest pledge class in chapter history and our recognition of having the highest GPA on campus. Besides our Recruitment and Scholarship Committees, each and every one of our committees have also benefited from the use of the website. If you have questions or comments about how we incorporate the Celect Systems into our chapter management, please get ahold of us through our Contact Us page.

Every year, Americans celebrate the signing of the United States Constitution in 1787 by recognizing this important day in history on September 17th. Phi Kappa Psi chose to use the same day to recognize a similarly important day in our Fraternity's history. Nearly a century after the United States drafted its first set of governing documents, Phi Kappa Psi did the same...
Constitution Day is recognized within the Fraternity each year on September 17th to celebrate the founding of the Fraternity's modern governing document. Adopted at the 1886 Grand Arch Council in Indianapolis, the Constitution of Phi Kappa Psi provided the foundation for the undergraduate controlled structure that makes Phi Psi unique in the interfraternal world. It established the day-to-day control of the Executive Council, with a majority of the vote being controlled by the undergraduate Archons, elected by each District. An ever-evolving document, many of the same rules established over 120 years ago still control how Phi Kappa Psi does business today.
To help unite brothers around the country, we are asking all brothers to wear your Phi Kappa Psi badge on Friday, September 17. Honor both your country and your fraternity with this display. It takes no time and effort, and you may even have a chance to talk about what your Fraternity means to you as people see the badge displayed.

Since our founding in 1852, every Phi Psi has experienced the "Great Joy of Serving Others." This notion has recently been exemplified by Brother Michael Bloomberg who became a member of Phi Psi while attending John Hopkins University. Brother Bloomberg, who the current Mayor of New York City and the 8th richest person in the United States, with a net worth of $18 billion, recently agreed to join Bill Gates and Warren Buffets "Giving Pledge". The Giving Pledge is an effort to invite the wealthiest individuals and families in America to commit to giving the majority of their wealth to the philanthropic causes and charitable organizations of their choice either during their lifetime or after their death. The following is a copy of Brother Bloombergs commitment letter:
One of the senior managers at my company, Bloomberg LP, recently told me that part of his new hires recruiting pitch is to ask, “What other company can you work for where the owner gives nearly all the profits to charity?" Nothing has ever made me prouder of my company than that one story.
In the 1990s, a generous individual planned to leave Johns Hopkins University, my alma mater, $50 million upon his death. But I asked him: Why wait? Why deny financial aid to this generation? Why deny a possible cure for a disease to this generation? That convinced him - and he gave the money right then and there.
As I wrote in my autobiography around that same time, the reality of great wealth is that you can't spend it and you can't take it with you. For decades, I've been committed to giving away the vast majority of my wealth to causes that I'm passionate about - and that my children are passionate about. And so I am enthusiastically taking the Giving Pledge, and nearly all of my net worth will be given away in the years ahead or left to my foundation.
Making a difference in people's lives - and seeing it with your own eyes - is perhaps the most satisfying thing you'll ever do. If you want to fully enjoy life - give. And if you want to do something for your children and show how much you love them, the single best thing - by far - is to support organizations that will create a better world for them and their children. Long term, they will benefit more from your philanthropy than from your will. I believe the philanthropic contributions I'm now making are as much gifts to my children as they are to the recipient organizations.
Giving also allows you to leave a legacy that many others will remember. Rockefeller, Carnegie, Frick, Vanderbilt, Stanford, Duke - we remember them more for the long-term effects of their philanthropy than for the companies they founded, or for their descendents. And by giving, we inspire others to give of themselves, whether their money or their time.
In my third career, as Mayor of New York, I've seen just how needed - and how powerful – private donations are. Public-private partnerships are at the heart of our efforts to improve public health and safety, fight poverty, fix a once-broken school system, expand economic opportunity, promote the arts, protect our environment, and so much more.
As a philanthropist, I've also had the opportunity to see the impact private donations can have in other countries - and just how far each dollar can go. For instance, with private funding, we can prevent tens of millions of premature deaths caused by tobacco-related diseases and traffic accidents -just two areas where my foundation has been active.
In my public and private lives, I have seen how small groups can make a very big difference – in cleaning up a park, starting a school, or helping others in need, whether in their own community or halfway around the world. I am thrilled that my friends Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are bringing together this group, which could have an unprecedented impact on what philanthropy can achieve. And the larger this group grows, the more people will share in the pleasure of giving, as well as the benefits that it will bring to the world.

Brother Robert Dudley, a Phi Psi alumni from the University of Illinois, was recently named the successor to outgoing BP CEO, Tony Hayward. Raised in Hattiesburg, Miss., Dudley — now 54 — pursued a degree in chemical engineering at the U of I, according to a BP press release.
Joe Halliday, a Phi Kappa Psi fraternity brother of Dudley’s, said Dudley’s successful future was evident in his years at the University. “The instant you met him, you knew he was destined for a great purpose. He was confident, yet humble and down to earth,” Halliday said in an e-mail.
Halliday, who first attended the University in 1975, recalled Dudley spending much of his time studying and mentoring the men in their fraternity, including himself. “I usually saw him returning from studying around 10 p.m. with many heavy books. I was also in engineering and he would encourage me to stick with it, even though physics and thermodynamics were particularly demanding,” he said. “He was like that to everyone, encouraging and sincerely interested in hearing what you had to say.”
Prior to this appointment, Dudley served as a U.S.-based executive director for BP. As he hands his former position to Lamar McKay, chairman and president of BP America, Dudley has high hopes for the future. “I do not underestimate the nature of the task ahead, but the company is financially robust with an enviable portfolio of assets and professional teams that are among the best in the industry. I believe this combination — allied to clear, strategic direction — will put BP on the road to recovery,” Dudley said in the press release.
